  • Fern Smith – Art practice online -COVID-19

    24 March 2020 – art practice online

    A few times a week as we bunker down in the COVD-19 world I hope to post my thinking’s and workings. You can follow as a guide if you choose. I will also be available for video conferencing during the week where you can talk about your art practice. Most of my work will be created away from the studio – this will enable me to be like you, maybe a novice at art practice.

    Therefore, I will use what I have pens paper scrap paper recycled boxes – maybe paint or ink but only of the simple kind. My aim is not many tools or external resources (i.e. art shops)

    COVD-19 poses opportunities of simplicity, it’s during a time where we can’t run down to the shops or make big messes in the kitchen. We may be sharing accommodation or in a confined unit or room.

    Like this washed up fairy penguin alone at Portarlington, we find ourselves in an environment that is new. How as artists do we conduct our art practice? How do we keep our valuable audience engaged? What will change?

    Lets see if I can keep a diary, a life inside the COVID-19 world pandemic.

  • The Sea is Sinking a huge community success.

    The Sea is Sinking, a community created (500 participants aged 3-90 years) immersive interactive art installation was a huge success with over 700 visitors to the exhibition. A note from comments page ” A wonder world! … Really special to have an interactive exhibition where kids can engage so freely without parents worrying and managing them. I even learned some new facts…” Updates and the project will be to the Sea is Sinking page in time.

    Friday 22nd 1.30-2.15pm: Official Opening
    MC Maggie Cowling, Speakers Mayor Tapinos, Principal Maria Marchionna Moomba Park Primary School and serenaded by the MPPS Coraleers.
    Saturday 23rd Noon-1pm: Round table
    (Conversation with STEM Leader of Moomba Park Primary School James Crottie; lead artists Youbi Lee, Maggie Cowling Margaret Cowling and artist – curator Fern Smith – Come on ask those questions
    Sunday 24th Noon-7pm: Sound waves an Open Mic experience
    Come fish around with your voice or bring you instrument of choice and the hosts will plug you in – drop in a note and respond to the installation hosted by professional musicians.

    4pm – 7pm David Holmes composer and performer
    Monday 25th Noon-1pm: Shared Cup
    A time to reflect on its success or limitations where to next over a cuppa tea a gentle inspirational conversation.
    Monday 25th Tuesday 26th The art of investigation – how does art decompose?
    Guiding principle of The Sea is Sinking was to investigate, educate and encourage creativity with the most effect environmentally sound art practice while learning and understanding our beautiful port Phillip bay. This exhibition is waterway safe and can be composted for a garden. Come and collect what you want from the exhibition on the condition you document where it goes and up load to this FB page

    Collecting Works: Keepers – you may have created a work or covet a work and would like to hang onto it for a while longer – go on take it – its free its yours – just tell us why and post on the FB page its new home –
    Ode to the tree – Its getting close to Christmas you may want a different kind of Christmas tree – go on take a column and stand and add to it – was a tree isn’t it?
    25 November 4pm -7.30pm – The art of investigation – how does art decompose? Collect works and again in the morning of 26 November 10am – 1pm – collect works .

    Tuesday 26th 2- 6 The great carry on – come help us take the remainder of the exhibition to its new home where it will decompose.
