Updates on Fern Smith’s art activities

  • Art facilitation 3 – 29-03-2020

With enthusiastic friends from NYNY we teleconferenced our next art facilitation session . We looked at some aspects of still life shadowing techniques and making a standalone fairy penguin.

Here is a beautiful example  of a fairy penguin by B.C from NYNY

The off-screen tasks is to make a family of penguins for next weeks session. A referencing point https://penguinfoundation.org.au/about-little-penguins/

Here is an example of building more depth into a drawing using different techniques – this was achieved by first working on shading inspired by K.C. and this is P.C.’s first build up of a sketch to add depth – a beautiful character filled bird.

Building depth into a work – we used a quince online – we are using basic videoing teleconferencing face to face – no bells and whistles. I finished my example offline

Next Wed/Thurs will be our next session – Enjoy until then – Post your family of 3D fairy penguins made of recycled soft cardboard.

  • Art Facilitation 2 – 28-3-2020

With the help of two children in NY city and myself in Victoria at our first teleconference workshop we devised some away from the screen time projects.

Task 1: Was to make a multi-faced puppet head from the drawings they did in the online session. I was to go offline and to the same task

The steps – draw faces, scrunch up news paper or any scape paper in your apartment and stick the faces to it.

Not as easy as it looks –

Task 2: The other task is to take a photo and draw from the photo – lucky me I can walk to a no person bayside and draw and take a photo.

Can’t wait until tomorrow morning (their late afternoon) to see what they produced

  • Doodle completed – Fern Smith – COVID-19-1

A doodle is just that, a doodle. What is great about a doodle is, you let your mind wonder in and out of the creative process. It’s not an achievement, it just is.

Doodles are excellent to get back into the creative space or gain confidence in the creative process.

A doodle allows you, to be you in the moment. You can go back to it or you can leave it.

  • Fern Smith – Art practice online -COVID-19

A few times a week as we bunker down in the COVD-19 world I hope to post my thinking’s and workings. You can follow as a guide if you choose. I will also be available for video conferencing during the week where you can talk about your art practice. Most of my work will be created away from the studio – this will enable me to be like you, maybe a novice at art practice.

Therefore, I will use what I have pens paper scrap paper recycled boxes – maybe paint or ink but only of the simple kind. My aim is not many tools or external resources (i.e. art shops)

COVD-19 poses opportunities of simplicity, it’s during a time where we can’t run down to the shops or make big messes in the kitchen. We may be sharing accommodation or in a confined unit or room.

If you would like a conversation about you art creation or art practice – text me your name, and contact details and we will start form there. +61 408978747 Let’s see how it goes.

  • COVID-19 Diary 1

Like this washed up fairy penguin alone at Portarlington, we find ourselves in an environment that is new. How as artists do we conduct our art practice? How do we keep our valuable audience engaged? What will change?

Lets see if I can keep a diary, a life inside the COVID-19 world pandemic.
